A Different Kind of Instructor

Hello there, I'm Jessa Brooke, owner of

Honey Rose Movement Studio,

and I welcome you to this sacred space with delight.

 

I've taught yoga since 2015,

belly dance fitness since 2020,

and somatic movement and Pilates since 2022, 

after a ten-year massage therapy career

and more than 25 years in Anusara yoga practice.

 

My path led me to an incredible opportunity at a

pelvic floor physical therapy clinic

as a Wellness Coach leading

Belly dance fitness and yoga classes within the clinic,

and working closely with the amazing owner as her

Patient Care Coordinator.

 

I absorbed first‑class knowledge in pelvic floor health

and adapted that awareness into the classes I led.

For patients in the clinic, this practice cultivated

pelvic floor balance, reducing leakage and easing pain,

while opening pathways to strength, resilience,

and embodied confidence.

 

I opened Honey Rose Mvmt Studio

(formerly Embodhi Feminine Wellness) 

in 2022 to support women seeking

enhanced pelvic health, strength and balance,

peace of mind and feminine embodiment.

 

I also live with the chronic widespread pain conditions of

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos, Fibromyalgia,

and all of the "friends" both conditions bring along, like 

IBS-C , POTS, ADHD, MCAS,

migraines, chronic fatigue,

prolific bruising and joint subluxations.

 

Ehlers-Danlos is a connective tissue disorder

wherein the collagen 'blueprint' in our DNA is faulty,

causing our connective tissue to be too lax and stretchy.

Since collagen makes up every single fiber of our body,

the effects are felt system-wide.

 

Considered a 'rare condition', 

but affecting at least 1 in 500~

research and physician education about

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos

has historically been utterly lacking.

 

Knowledge of Fibromyalgia hasn't fared much better.

Most treatments rely on medications that can cause

intolerable side effects in our delicate systems~

and exercise, without proper guidance.

 

While I've curated the best possible primary care team,

conventional medicine leaves a lot to be desired.

My pcp's are interested and open to learning,

while admitting that they are following my lead.

Fewer specialists have been helpful.

 

And, when I tell them that I teach

Belly dance, Pilates, yoga and somatic movement,

their response, with a shrug, always is,

"Well, you're doing everything we'd tell you to do".


A Different Kind of Exercise

Watching videos from other fitness guides,

I shudder at the unsafe instructions

that invite injury and pain in our vulnerable bodies

while overlooking the basic structural challenges

that those of us with these conditions face.

 It's not their fault~ they just aren't aware of it

because they don't have it. 

 

Those exercise videos are not for us.

 

On the flip side, I found EDS-aware exercise videos online

unexciting and not very enjoyable,

leaving me uninspired and unmotivated to continue.

 

We deserve to feel pleasure in our bodies.

 

Since knowledge about, and truly informed care for,

these conditions is either absent or uninspiring,

I knew I had to become my own specialist.

 

Not only to reclaim the joy and pleasure of my own body

~ which felt like had been stolen from me ~

but to have the best, most helpful tools to offer others~

the kind of informed, compassionate, inspiring care

that those of us with these conditions desperately need~

especially when we feel like we have been robbed of

our femininity, joy and pleasure.

 

Movement that helps, not harms.

That brings pleasure to our bodies, not pain.

That excites us for our movement practice 

and inspires us to live our lives as fully as possible.

 

With the specialized resources,

knowledge, experience, passion,

hyperfocus and pattern recognition

my life experience has bestowed upon me,

I'm gifted to understand these concepts

at levels missed by most practitioners,

which is why Honey Rose Mvmt sessions

offer movement that honors, not injures,

and that flows, not forces,

and that we look forward to because it feels amazing.

 

Honey Rose began with a specialization in

women’s pelvic floor health~

another deep, unmet need within the h-EDS community.

This path naturally unfurled to encircle

hypermobility and Fibromyalgia,

woven from the threads of my lived expertise,

and forms the heart of what I offer at

Honey Rose Movement Studio.

The era of high-impact aerobics

and countless crunches has passed.

The archaic principle of 'No pain no gain'

is horrifically out-of-date for women,

especially when so many of us

*already* navigate chronic pain and pelvic floor issues

that are exacerbated by unconscious fitness.

 

Our feminine body views excessive force, high impact,

or disregard for pain boundaries as an attack,

triggering a chronic fight-or-flight response.

This stress response floods our system with cortisol,

exacerbating inflammation and flare-ups,

 increasing anxiety and *producing belly fat*.

 

Flow, not Force

Current scientific research,

practical experience and innate wisdom

collectively suggest that

overly strenuous exercise negatively affects

women's bodies, brains and hormones, 

and that low-impact, moderate-intensity,

fluid movements yield the most beneficial outcomes
